Friends and Artists at La Ultima Parada: A Celebration of Life on the Day of the Dead will showcase the vibrancy of Mexican culture through a collection of art, dances and musical performances that pay tribute to the past, present and future.

Over 200 masked danzantes will participate in a tribute dance “La Viejada” to honor our dearly departed. Participants will include San Jose folklorico dance companies: Grupo Folklorico Los Laureles, Grupo Folk Yolotli Guerrerence, Xochitl Cultural de Abraham Lincoln HS, Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol de San José State, San Jose Guerrero’s de Guadalupe, Ballet Folklorico Guadalupano de Saint Mary’s College of California, Rocketship Folklorico & the newest group in San Jose– Folklórico Herúvi Kalo. Folklorico dance presenters will include: Los Lupeños, Los Laureles, Folklórico Herúvi Kalo & Fuego Nuevo. There will be musicians present performing a wide spectrum of Mexican musical styles; including Colibri with música jarocha, música huasteca, and sones from Michoacan, Jalisco Harpist Salvador “Chava” Vazquez and the wonderful Mariachi Juvenil Alma de Mexico. Content and marketing partners will include: Sonido Clash, UnGramr, FutureArtsNow!, Bobbi Vie & 1nspirationIsFree.
Keeping with the spirit of honoring those who have passed, there will be a camposanto (graveyard) created by Artist, Raquel Burciaga, to pay tribute to iconic Latino artists and entertainers in recognition of their contributions to Latin culture. The centerpiece of the event will feature an enormous altar in the middle of the plaza and an altar exhibit in the theater lobby.
Guests can complement their experience with culturally relevant food and beverages. One of the features will be chicken mole provided by downtown eatery Chacho’s. For those looking for something sweeter, pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) provided by San Jose’s Pink Elephant. Mexican hot chocolate, and atole will also be available. Over a dozen Dia de los Muertos themed retailers will also be selling a variety of goods.
While the official event takes place on November 1, the Mexican Heritage Plaza will feature CARNIVAL RIDES starting Friday, October 30. Rides will be open Saturday October 31st and all day Sunday November 1st, when La Ultima Parada kicks off in full. In this way, the Day of the Dead event will invite the community to participate in the beautiful cultural legacies of Mexico. FACEPAINTING and a COSTUME CONTEST highlight a few of the family-friendly activities available.
